The defending champion, Brydan Klein has been bundled out in the first round of the 2010 Burnie International by qualifier Thailand’s Kittipong Wachiramanawong in three tight sets.
Wachiramanowong shot out of the blocks to win the first set 6-2 but Klein hit back in the second to take it 6-1. The third set was looking as if Klein would take control but Wachiramanawong was not to be outdone breaking late in the set to secure victory 6-4 in the third.
Number three seed, Australian Marinko Matosevic was another seed not to make it past the first round going down to fellow countryman Sadik Kadir 6-3 4-6 7-6(5).
The number two seed Guillaume Rufin of France survived an early scare to win in three sets against New Zealand’s Jose(Rubin) Statham 6-3 4-6 6-0. Rufin was beaten in the first round of the 2010 Australian Open by Bernard Tomic.
Number six seed, Nick Lindahl was in great form against Finland’s Henri Kontinen winning in straight sets 6-1 6-1 to set up a second round clash with Bernard Tomic.
Number five seed, Tatsuma Ito of Japan won convincingly over Australian Joshua Crowe 6-1 6-4 to set up a showdown against veteran Jo Sirianni.
Wilcard, James Lemke of Australia had a great win over Junn Mitsuhashi of Japan in the first match on centre court coming from a set down 5-7 6-1 7-6 and will most likely face no.1 seed Grega Zemlja of Slovakia who will play his first round match on Wednesday. Zemlja has just finished runner-up in the latest ATP Challenger event in Honolulu.
Sixteen year old, Australian Luke Saville almost got over the line against Dayne Kelly winning the first set 6-4 before Kelly won the last two sets 6-3 6-4. Kelly will now face number two seed Guillaume Rufin in the next round.
