
No.7 seed Greg Jones scored a convincing straight sets win over Sam Groth in the feature match of day one of the 2010 Burnie Tennis International.
Jones was solid on serve during the first set and broke Groth late in the set to grab the advantage winning 6-3. Jones return of serve totally blunted Groth’s big serving and the second set reflected this with Jones breaking serve again midway through the set and remained solid on serve to win the match in convincing fashion 6-4.
Jones will face the winner of Tsung-Hua Yang of Chinese Taipei and wildcard Matt Reid in the second round.
In other first round matches veteran Joseph Sirianni was too good for Colin Ebelthite with another straight sets win 6-2 6-2 and set up a second round match up against Japan’s Yuicho Ito.
In the upset of the day Ito took out the no.8 seed Matthew Ebden in straight sets. Ito was well on top in the first set winning 6-2 but fought hard in the second to take the match 7-5.
Australia’s John Millman was in good form against Japan’s Hiroki Moriya winning his way into the second round 6-2 6-4 and set up a round two match against no.4 seed and defending champion Brydan Klein. Klein will play qualifier Kittipong Wachiramanowong in the second match of the day. The night session matches will feature no.3 seed Marinko Matosevic against fellow Australian Sadik Kadir starting at 6pm followed by the rising star in world tennis Bernard Tomic up against New Zealand’s Daniel King-Turner. This match will be streamed in real time on the website starting at around 7.30pm AEDT.
The first day of the main draw in the Women’s International will start tomorrow. The first day’s action will include no.4 seed and reigning Australian Open singles champion Karolina Pliskova up against Japan’s Remi Tezuka.
Other featured matches include No.2 seed Arina Rodionova up against Australia’s Daniela Scivetti and Tasmania’s Alyssa Hibberd has drawn Japan’s Chiaki Okadaue in her first round match.
