Australia’s rising star, Bernard Tomic is through to the second round and will meet fellow Australian, Matthew Ebden after both recorded straight set wins over their opponents in round one.

Tomic was convincing in defeating Sam Groth on centre court in the twilight feature match winning 6-4 7-6(4). Tomic held serve all match and was able to break the big serving Groth, who recorded the fastest serve for the tournament at 223kph to take the first set 6-4.  The second set saw both players hold serve for the set with the tiebreak going the way of Tomic 7-4.

Western Australian, Matthew Ebden was in great form outclassing third seed, Grega Zemlja of Slovenia winning in straight sets 6-2 6-3.

In other matches, more seeds crashed out of the first round with top seed, Victorian, Marinko Matosevic beaten by Canadian, Phillip Bester in three sets going down 6-2 4-6 6-2 to make an early exit.

Australia’s Carsten Ball, the number four seed, was also knocked out going down to Great Britian’s James Ward in straight set 6-2 6-4.

Italy’s Paolo Lorenzi, seeded number two, won convincingly against Australian Open junior boys runner-up, Luke Saville winning 6-3 6-4.

Victorian, Chris Guccione took out Western Australian Brydan Klein in two tight sets winning 6-3 7-6(9/7).

Japan had a good day with both seeds recording solid wins over their opponents.  Number six seed Yuichi Sugita, got over the top of Thailand’s Danai Udomchoke, coming back from set down 5-7 6-3 6-2.  Tatsuma Ito, seeded number eight, was far too good for New South Wales, Greg Jones winning 6-4 6-0.
