Cipolla was first up on centre court after a rain delay and faced Tatsuma Ito of Japan. The first set was a real battle with both players playing fantastic defence which lead to extended rallies. Cipolla got the only break in the 6th game to lead 4-2 and was able to hold the advantage for the remainder of the set to close it out 6-4.
The second set was much of the same with both players grinding it out. Nothing separated the pair throughout the set which lead to a tiebreak. Cipolla excelled during the tiebreak with superior play to take out the tiebreak 7-3 and book his spot into the final.
The second semi final between Chris Guccione and Bernard Tomic was a classic for the big crowd on centre court. Guccione started the better of the pair winning the first set 6-3. The second set was tight with big serving a feature from both players with Tomic matching the aces count. The set would eventually end up in a tiebreak with Tomic getting the better of Guccione to force the match into a third set. The final set had the big crowd on the edge of their seats with Tomic and Guccione trading blows but Guccione was starting to get on top with aces count. Guccione served 15 aces for the set and 27 for the match and at 4-4 broke Tomic to serve for the match but Tomic was not going to give in easily. Guccione was put under pressure on serve when Tomic hit two forehand passing shot in the first two points and broke back to force the match into a tiebreak to decide the contest. Guccione held his nerve in the tiebreak to win it 7-5 and advanced to the final for the second time at the McDonald’s Burnie International.
